Oathmark Goblin Wolf Riders, well, at least wolves….

Posted on September 28, 2021

I long time ago, I painted up about forty old GW Chaos hounds. I painted the models to fill in Dire Wolves in my old Vampire Counts army for fantasy battles. I had planned to use the models in multiple armies that used different types of large dog units. As time went on, I opted to not do this and actually paint separate units for my different armies. The reason for this, it that I did not want to have the same basing for all my armies (my VC are base gray dirt). So, slowly but surely, I have been painting these units over the years. In this case, I decided it was time to experiment with my future Beastman army paint scheme on a wolf type unit.

While at my FLGS, I came across some new sets of Goblin Wolf Riders for Oathmark. Looking at the wolves, they had the fir/skin look that matched my Eastman miniatures, so I picked up three sets (the price was right). I had no plan to use the goblins, so I gave them to a friend of mine for his LotR army.

I inspected the modes and saw there was only a few poses and not any opportunities to mix and match the sides, so I went with the models out of the box. They come in two halves, which includes the head. I was not too happy with the moldings, as it gives a seem all the way through the figure that needs some filling (which I did not do well. I glued all the wolves together and attached them to some extra GW bases I had in my base drawer. I then sprayed all the models with some Krylon spray gray primer.

Next, worked up the wolves. First was a black ink wash on all the models. Once this dried, I worked up the grey with two shades of lighter gray. I then used some white to dry and wet brush the heavy fur. I then painted all the open mouths with black contrast paints. Once that dried, I hit all the visible tongue with red followed by a brown wash and a red highlight. I then painted all the teath with Ivory, so they would stand out a little from the fur.

Next, I attached ballast to all the bases with white glue and let that dry until my next free night. This was overpainted dark brown (along with the bases). A dry brush of tan and then ivory, to finish up the coloring. I then used white glue to attach some Scenic Express summer turf. Once all dry, I hit the models with Testors Dull Coat to seal everything in and protect the models.

With that, I now have three small units of wolves for my future Beastman army. Not the greatest quality of mini, if I am to be honest. However, they will get the job done and are another proof that my army color scheme will work. Now we will just need to see when I get back to the army!
