Lord of the Rings Teant Army

Posted on April 26, 2019
Treant army goes to war!

I have been slowly working to update and repair my old Warhammer Wood Elves army for use with the 9th Age rules. While going through my rebasing, I needed to make a decision regarding my treemen. I had too many for use in T9A painted and decided that I would like to replace my older figures with the more recent GW plastic offerings. At the same time, a friend of mine has been leading a group that plays GWs Lord of the Rings. I had decided sometime back to get into that also, so figured this would make a good home for my painted treemen.

First generation GW Treemen with later Durthulu model.

With that, I popped all my figures off their old 50mm square bases and rebased them on the appropriate 60mm rounds. A few minor repairs later, they were ready to go! I have always been a fan of the Treants from the Lord of the Rings books and movies, but hated the GW models. With this move, problem solved!

same models from the back.

With that said, I was short a couple of figures to make the army the right size. One figure I felt I needed was Treebeard. I did like that GW figure. A couple of weeks looking at eBay and I found one for a reasonable price. Paid for that, had it shipped and repainted it to my liking. One down….

From left to right: second generation GW Treman, GW Treebeard model and finally the Privateer Treeman.

The next figure I found was from Privateer Press. Just happened to see it on the shelf at my local Hobby Shop (Huzzah Hobbies). The model treeman figureis in plastic that was the right size. Perfect! Assembled it, painted it and the last piece of the army was finished (I technically do need to get some dismounted hobbits, I guess). I went with a different scheme to reflect the different types of trees in the movies. As such, this one is base brown, while the others are base grey or a mix of brown and gray. I particularly liked the gaping mouth and hanging apples on this one to add a little more color.

Rear view of the three trees.

With that, I’m ready to play and have a new home for my trees! Maybe need to add some flowers to those bases first…..
