I had posted a while ago, that I decided to base my old ancient armies to play Lion Rampant. I decided to stay with 40mm frontage to be able to use the figures for other rules that follow the old WRG basing frontages, should I want to, in the future. Well, I ran out of bases, so I had to hold off on that work, until I got more bases in.

Well, the day came and I received a bunch of 40mm square and 40mm x 20mm bases from Shogun miniatures. I also ordered a number of metal flanged movement trays, to ease the movement process on the war-game table!

With those in had, I dug out the roman infantry I had picked up from Gajo a very long time ago. The figures had been sitting in a box, waiting for some love for a number of years. I had not found any rules that I really liked, so they were one of those stillborn projects. Having had some fun with the new version of Lion Rampant, it was time to get to work on those and my older figures. However, I did not have enough bases! That being solved, I got to work!

I glued the cavalry and artillery to the larger bases and the infantry to the shallower ones. My plan is to have all units with the same foot prints of 120mm x 40mm. Well, all but the artillery. This will work well with the Lion Rampant ranges I think. I will ignore the figure counts for casualties and just use markers for the six or twelve hit points. The larger figure count is just for the aesthetic!

For the Romans, I wanted a more Europe friendly base, so I went with the medium brown Muddy Paw mix I came up with for Central Europe. Once that all dried, I just added some Scenic Express summer flock. The muddy pay covered up the figure base, with no hassle.

I sprayed the movement trays with some Krylon satin tan I had in my closet. This matched up with the tan sprayed bases and helps blend the color of the base side with the magnetic base. I went with the satin, as this does not scratch as easily as the flat.

One of the things I realized when pulling the cavalry out of the packs, was that they did not have lances molded on. The figures required metal ones to be installed (they were also in the bag). I did not want to go that rout, so I found an old black hand sweeping brush and cut off a bunch of bristles. I attached those and just painted the tips silver to solve the problem. I figure, those will be more resilient on the tabletop. We shall see….

Next, I just need to do the rest of my figures that are on bases…. I guess I also need to order more Romans to fill out the extra figures I still have that do not fill out full units……
