I was in Williamsburg for a visit last weekend and wanted to check out Tyndalls Point Park. I have been to both Yorktown Museums (Federal and State) a number of times, but never stopped across the river to Gloucester Point. Gloucester Point was held by the British during the battle of Yorktown. Cornwallis tried to escape across to the point by boat to get out of his trap, but was unable. This is the area were the British Legion fought against Lauzan’s Legion (on of the largest cavalry fights of the Revolutionary War). This was also the location of a fort that took prominence during the seven days campaign of the US Civil War.

There is not too much to see, as most of the area has been populated and build up by housing in the area. However, there is a small park that covers the location of the old fort and you can go down to the river side to see the view from the opposite bank into Yorktown itself.

It is a little tricky to get to (just because of the road patterns around the bridge), but be patient and you’ll find it. There are a number of signs to get you there.

There is a small area, where you can park and start your stroll. The park has a paved walking path that has numerous signs to give you a feel of what transpired in the area during the Revolutionary and Civil War. It is a short walk and you can check everything out in an hour.

The road to the river has been closed off, so you have to drive back to the river on the opposite side of route 17 to get to Gloucester “beach”. This is a local spot that has man made beach and pier areas. From here, you can look straight across to Yorktown. I have to admit, it was much closer than I thought!

I was unable to find the Battle of the Hook marker farther inland. This area, like the rest is all residential housing now, so one cannot really get a lay of the land.

In any case, a couple of short stops, if you are in the area and have an interest in the Yorktown Campaign!
