Acheson Creations Bulk Buys 15mm Gabions.

Posted on March 30, 2024

Acheson Creations has been making war-game terrain for quite a number of years. They have been a staple of most east cost war-game conventions. Recently, they have announced that they would be closing up shop and were selling all their molds. Some of these are showing up at some other companies, so the entire line will not be lost. Well, even though they are shutting down, it is kind of a slow motion action!

While you cannot get a lot of their old stuff, they are still offering a few figure lines and resin terrain. The terrain is mostly done through their “build buys”. Basically, you order a set and get a whole bunch of models. I have been picking these up over the last year for different things. Last year, I got their 25mm gabions for 18th century 25mm gaming. I liked them, so I decided to pick up the 15mm sets for that scale too. Gabion are something that fits a very large period of military history, so always a nice staple in anyones terrain collection.

I thought I wanted a decent amount, so I ordered two complete sets (it worked for 25mm). Well… They arrive and I can say I may have miscalculated! One set would have been enough! Anyway, I got them, so needed to paint them up.

The set is made of the usual Acheson grey shiny resin. It is very good quality and strong (not likely to break if you drop it). The sets include straight, corner sections and a gun position. I was not as interested in the gun position, but it came with the set and they are already quite reasonably priced, so I am not going to quibble. Since they are going away, I would recommend picking them up soon, if you are interested.

Since I have so many, I wanted to go with a very easy paint job to get them done as fast as I could. I went with a spray paint of Krylon camo tan. I then hit each piece with some GW contrast brown that I am trying to use up! I would normally used some woodland scenics dark brown, but that was unavailable in the stock at the time. Anyway, I hit all the parts with wash and let that dry. I then drybrushed all the models with some tan craft paint, hitting the gabions with a heavier drybrush. I grabbed some more contrast and hit the tops again for the dirt. Next was some Scenic Express flock to close out the work. I finished up with a spray dull coat and all my gabions are ready for the table! Now I just have to figure out what battle I could possible set up that would use them all…
