Home Brew ACW Game.

I have been away from home for a while on travel, so am going into my backlog of blog articles make new posts. While away, a couple of my buddies shared some photos of a game they played (probably to rub it in). I thought the pictures were nice, so I thought I would share them here.

The rules are for 25mm semi skirmish, with each unit being a company of dudes. Each unit is twelve figures, with three units and a HQ equalling a regiment. These are adjusted to reflect large and small regiments in ACW. The system is home brew, with a bit of toy soldier feel.

They run these games (always historical scenarios) at the various HMGS conventions. So, if you are in attendance, you should check them out in person (or even sign up to play!). And now, a word from one of the players:

The scenario involved the Union having to hold Route 7 but an aspirational objective of capturing the Seccess supply wagons.  The battle was fought primarily on both flanks with a lot of firefights, some melee scraps and a lot of regiments seeing their battalions come and go on the field of slaughter.

For me, highlights included the Pennsylvania Reserve Rifles shooting up the Confederate batteries at the start of the game killing two of five gunners for each battery.  This was followed later in the game by a failed cavalry charge against the guns, which while it drove off more gunners ultimately was driven back by a spirited defense (aka better dice rolling.)  The exchange on the Union far right witnessed both sides committing multiple regiments battling at the wood-line in a see-saw exchange of fire and bayonet.

The Union left also had its share of entertainment with a series of exchanges—including a melee between skirmishers that didn’t resolve itself until the last Union soldier surrendered—but the ultimate sweeping of that flank by Federal forces.

A fun set of home grown rules, great terrain and another well-spent Tuesday for those of us who could make it.  – Milwaukee Jay
