LotR – Forgeworld Quickbeam

Posted on May 22, 2023

I did a LotR Ent army some years back (one which I still have not played on the tabletop). These are some of my favorite characters from the LotR books and movies, so it was a natural paint project. I remember when GW released their original models for the game. I was very disappointed int he models, so I never picked them up. I did pick up a Treebeard model and ended up suing this as the basis of an Ent army. I had a number of the older GW Treeman models for Warhammer Wood Elves army. When GW replaced these with larger plastic models, I decided I would get the new ones and use the older models for LotR. I added some other models and finished up my army. Or so I thought!

Forgeworld released the Quickbeam model and added rules for him for the game. Well, the price was not “terrible”, so I ordered the model and had it delivered. The model comes in the usual Forgeworld semi hard grey resin. There is a bit of flash that has to be cleaned up and there was a little bit of misalignment of the molds (another Forgeworld common problem). Some X-acto work and this was all sorted out. I glued the figure together with some super glue. Not having any instructions clear included made it interesting to figure out where to put which branches, but I figured it out.

I decided I wanted a grey tree bark look, I primed the model grey. I then hit the entire model with a brown wash. I layered up a few shades of gray drybrush. Next I hit all the leaves with dark green and then a couple lighter shades of green drybrush. I finished with painting the eyes. Next was the basing. I covered the base with Vallejo brown pumice and a few rocks. Some tan drybrush and layering gray on the rocks for the painting. I painted the base edges brown and then added some flocking grass to the base. I sealed up the entire model with Tamiya matt varnish spray and I now have another model for my Ent Army.

I am happy with how the model came out. Like all Forgeworld models, you need to be prepared to take more time to clean things up. You also have to be prepared to pay the premium price. If you are OK with that, and you want another Ent model, this might be the kit for you.
