Star Wars Legion – CIS Spider Droids

Posted on February 12, 2022

The Kashiik wave for Star Wars Legion was just release last December. In this release was the COS Spider Droids. I picked up three of these as support units when they arrived at my FLGS. These come in hard plastic mounted on sprues, like all the newer sets from Azmodie. The molding quality of the models is fantastic with very small connection points that are easy to cut and trim. As with most Azmodie models, the instructs are not the clearest in the world, so you would want to test fit before you glue things together. Otherwise, you may find a piece does not fit or alight properly! These models are parts light, so it does not take much to figure it out.

I glued these all together I one night sitting while watching TV. I built the models at the same time, so ensure I could make some variations. I start by pulling the instructions out and cutting out all the pieces and setting them on the instruction sheet on top of their section on the page. I then go through and trim all the flash for all the pieces. I then test fit each section before moving to the next. Once that is done, I glued the sections together using Tamiya liquid glue. I then move to the next section and do the process again, until I finish all the models. The kit comes with three weapons options. As they mount to the center, you kind of have to decide from the beginning what weapon you want. Some other kits allow you to add these last, so you can switch them out (either by friction or adding magnets). In the case of these, I wanted the cannons, so it was not an issue. The set also comes with two sets of legs. Well, I had three, so that was not going to work! It was not a problem, as the legs can be mixed and matched with not problem. I decided to go with the set firing stance for one of the models and mix and match for the other two, to give the impression of movement. This adjusts the hight and stance of each, so they look a little different.

I picked these as I was still smarting over my long Arc Trooper saga and I thought the simple scheme on these would get me back up to speed. I started with a silver spray paint on all the models. Once dried, I hit the models with some GW black wash. Next was a drybursh of silver over the entire model. I then hit the black areas with some GW contrast black and gray highlight. I finished the colors by painting the eyes dark read, followed by a lighter red ad the bottom two thirds. I added a white reflective dot to the upper right of each. Next was my normal Legion basing. I spray the bases dark brown. As these bases have arc lines, I paint these panels with some tan paint that matches the GW earth crackle texture that I paint to the top of the base. I then hit the rim with some dark brown. Once the crackle surface dries (which takes a little time), I dry brush the areas with some tan. Next I add a few spikey tufts to break up the surface.

I then hit the entire model with some Krylon spray sealer coat. Normally, this would do it, but as I had those big glass eyes, I went back and added gloss coat to each to shiney them up a bit! One evening and I have three new units for my CIS army!
