FOW – Late War Romanian Army Unit Cards Review.

Posted on January 22, 2022

Following up on the Mid War Romanian review, it is time to look at the late ware Romanians. These technically were released before the mid war offering, but nothing says I cannot do this chronologically! The set comes packaged in a nice little card box to make it easy to keep everything together. The set includes three armored company options and one infantry option. You can find more options with the command cards, but frankly, the cavalry leg infantry and mountain troops should have been included here. This is a little bit of a disappointment, but you still get the most of the core formations.

The armor includes Pz-35t, Pz-38t and Stug options. There is also the options for the two different Romanian R-35 variants, which is a nice included. You also get the two TACAM self propelled AT gun options unique to the Romanians (I need to buy some of these!). The sdkfz 222 armored cars can be found, along with the Park-40 and Resita 75mm ATGs to round things out. The Resita still has the 13 penetration (a bit of a gamey item), so gives a nice heavy option,

The infantry company include the various artillery and ATG options. The artillery is a bit basic, but gives you the necessary guns. Like mid war, this set does not include the captured Russian equipment, which was a major equipment percent of the army. Not sure whey this is being left out. Hopefully, they will be included when they do the compilation in the future. For now, one can just proxy these for the listed units. I am happy the cavalry is included, but I think they could have included more units for the company and not require the infantry options or the use of the later to be reviewed command cards. You get the usual generic Stuka for air support and a 20mm AA option. Aircraft are a bit of a short cut for all the axis force now. I can understand that Battlefront wanting to streamline this to match their current airplane offerings. However, I think a more generic card would be better, just to catch those people that have other models that used to be offered. Once again, this is an easy proxy, so no big deal.

Another must buy if you play the army. Some great options and unique Romanian equipment options. I do think Battlefront should have made this a deeper set, it is only cardboard! Hopefully, they will do this in the future. In the meantime, you just need to get the command cards to fill things out.

“This set does not include the captured Russian equipment, which was a major equipment percent of the army.”

True, but only as long as the Romanians were on the side of the Axis powers, when they switched sides, the Red Army confiscated any captured Russian equipment they could find.

So the Romanians were forced to use the TAC Resita anti tank gun as field artillery, to replace what the Russians had confiscated.

Sadly Battlefront have failed to add a card for captured guns which does feature in the D-Day German command cards, for the Romanians.

As you point out they are missing opportunities for cross selling models.
