Flames of War V4 Waffen SS Command Cards

Posted on August 30, 2020

Along with the Wafen SSUnit Card release, we also got the Waffen SS Command Card release. These are produced in the usual high gloss cards in a card board box. The set includes various types of special abilities and SS division unit tweaks.

The cards give you four company formations to supplement the lists. Three of these are recon lists and the last is for Pioneers. Not a big fan of the recon lists, as they have the usual problem with shedding points. However, they work fine for my historical gaming needs, so I am glad they are added. the Pioneers seem like a great option to me. It only costs one point to upgrade your Panzergrenadiers to Pioneers. The plus to dig in is gold for an infantry unit!

Next is the meat of the card offerings…. The set gives you updates to build your companies to specific divisions. The cards allow you to build all the SS formations that were fighting in Normandy! Each gives you a way to tweak your units, with some cases even a discount to downgrade the units. The one true upgrade is the 9th SS (which happens to be the unit I own). Each card allows you to make your units Fearless Veterans, so SS of old! However, some of these upgrades are quite pricy, on top of rather high German costs anyway. The do add the flavor though, so this is my favorite part. We also get the usual handful of special use cards. I think a lucky card is always worth having (for those important key morale or counter attack rolls). We then get the Tiger Ace skills, which are again nice for flavor.

We also have the usual platoon upgrades/replacements. All are interesting, for flavor. I must admit, I would prefer these as unit cards (like all the sets), but better this than nothing.

We also get a heavy supply of special characters. There are not something my group ever uses, so cannot say too much. Generally, I think the bonuses are not worth the points, if I was playing in a tourney.

Overall, a nice set and a must have if you decide to play SS. Especially, those division tweaks!
