Asmodee has been on a tear releasing new stuff and reprinting old models. As such, I have been buying stuff faster than I can paint it! It does not help that I am still working on other stuff for other genres! One of the releases were the imperial Probe Droids. I have an Imperial army that has been languishing in assembled but not painted status. Mostly, due to the fact that I have been trying to finish off my droid army, but new stuff keeps coming out!
Well, I saw the box of probe droids and picked them up to add to my pile. After assembling them, instead of putting them away with the rest of the mould gray masses, I decided I would just go ahead and paint them. They are an easy project and I can always use droids as terrain.
One change I made was the bases. I do not like the flight stands from Asmodee, so I decided to replace them. I drilled out the bases themselves and got out some extra long stick pins and glued them through the hole. The flat portion of the pin gives something for the glue to hold onto on the bottom of the base. I used super glue to hold it in place and covered the top and bottom with some white blue to give a little more support. I then got out some snips and cut the pin to the right sizes for each droid. I could have skipped the cutting (would have been easier) if I just had regular pins, but we work with what we have!
So, since I wanted a black look, I opted to prime them in medium gray primer. Once that set, I painted the entire models with contrast black paint. I then drybrushed the entire models with some London Gray. Once that set, I went around and painted all the lenses with red. Next came a black wash over the entire models. This toned down the drybrush and darker the model to more of a black look. Finally, it gave some relief to the red. I then hit all the lenses with a dot of white and followed that up with a gloss coat on the lenses. Models done.
I finished up with the crackle over brown painted base technique and drybrush and a tuft. With that, I have some prob droids and it only took a short evening to paint them up!
