Legion – Separatists vs Republic fight over the Ancient Temple.

Posted on October 14, 2023

A old gaming buddy of mine was in town for a business trip and had some time to get in a game. So, I called a few other friends and set up a Star Wars Legion game. Other buddy put together a list for the Republic that he wanted to try and I set up an elite trooper based force for the Separatists.

Game day came along and we up the board. My temple terrain was next in the rotation, so I pulled that out and set it up on a green mat. I added a few hills underneath, some trees, alien plants and scatter terrain. This gave plenty of hard and soft cover for both sides and a decent amount of line of site blocking terrain. I made sure the center terrain was centered, so that mistake did not make a comeback!

The Republic force was built around Capitan Rex as the commander. He was joined by Chewbaka. Rex led three units of Phase I clone troopers. Two units had medics and the other has a clone commander. There were three units of snipers to bolster the activations (one led by Echo). Two AT-RT with laser cannons supported rounded out the force.

The Separatists were led by Kalani. He commanded three units of B2 droids, all with cannons. Two of the units also had a T series droid to add some firepower and overcome AI. Next, came the elite forces. Two units of BX commandos with vitro swords and frag grenades and a unit of Magna Guard with a whip and frag grenades. These units were supported by two dwarf spider droids with laser cannons and attack protocols.

We did a straight forward set up using battle line. The conditions were clear and the objective was three fixed positions along the center line of the table. Each player would get one point for each they controlled on turn two and four, with an addition two points on turn six.

The forces were equal in points, so we rolled off, with the Separatists getting the red player status. We assigned the players on each side and got to set up. The Republic went heavy on the left, with their characters positioned in the center.

The Separatists deployed with evenly across the front, with Kalani on their left. We then went to south moves, with the republic shifting about a bit. The Separatists took the opportunity to shoot forward, using blocking terrain to hide their moves.

We moved into turn one and the Separatists were able to move into range of two of the objectives, while the B2s on the left flank held back to bring fire on the outnumbering clones. The republic moved forward cautiously, fixing issues with their lines of fire. A few clones went down to the B2s, but the turn was otherwise uneventful.

The CIS position was strong, as they reinforced their forces in the center, keeping them hidden, but clang the objective. The elite forces on the left continued to press forward to sweep away the Republic forces. The Republic took the left objective and sent Rex and Chewy forward to contest the center. On the right, the Republic concentrated fire on the advancing B2s.

With Rex and Chewy forward, the Separatists sent their commandos over the temple and took on Rex. They continued their firefight on the right against the clones, moving forward with on the the B2s to try to push the clones off the objective. On the left, the other commandos jumped one of the sniper team, but somehow did not wipe them out. The Republic continued to shoot at the various B2 units to get them off the table. Seeing the Rex was in trouble (three wounds), Chewy charged into the commandoes and thinned them out. Rex used the opportunity to back out of the fight, as his furry friend had it in hand.

Turn four came it it was time to lock in some objectives. The left flank B2s moved forward to context the one objective, while thinning out one of the clone units. In the center, the remaining B2s tried to shoot down Rex with no effect. The commandos continued their loosing fight with Chewy. The commandos finally got rid of the sniper troop and the Magna guard took on one of the walkers. Kilani stayed back to hold the objective, protected by one of the spider droids. Chewy finished off the commandos and rex took on the remaining B2s, with support of the advancing squad of clones. This cleared all Separatist resistance in the center. The clones charged the B2s on the left, to tie them up and stop them from shooing the Blast cannon. The other clone unit provided fire support with one of the sniper units. The turn ended with the Republic in control of their left and center objectives, with Kilani holding the right objective securely. This put the Republic up one point.

Turn five came and the fight over the left objective continued with the clones charging in more units to overcome B2s, that were getting the better of the close combats. In the center, the Republic set up a fire line to shoot down the advancing Magna Guard and Commandos. The Commandos went down to the concentrated clone fire. The melting B2s finally fell, clearing the flank. The Separatists continued the melee against the clones, while trying to take out an AT RT with grenades and charging the center.

It was time for turn six, but the Separatists conceded. They would not be able to overcome the Republic units in the center in one turn and had no way to contest the other objective. The game ended with a 5-2 Republic victory. Captain Rex once again had the day!
